For a team that won the English Premier League title last season, many would have been expecting Liverpool to start this current campaign on a high and also compete for the title this season as well, but just like not everything that's expected usually happens, it did not turn out that way. The Reds started the season with a thrilling 4-3 win against Leeds United at Anfield and their fans thought that the club was continuing from where they stopped last season.

Istanbul Basaksehir centre back Martin Skrtel enjoyed a good national team career with Slovakia before he retired two years ago. The ex-Liverpool and Zenit St. Petersburg defender had played for the Slovakia senior national team over a period of 15 years before he called time on his career with the team.

Martin Skrtel played for the various youth teams at country level before making his debut in the colours of the senior team in 2004. He played a major part in helping Slovakia qualify for the FIFA World Cup tournament for the first time ahead of the 2010 edition in South Africa.

Former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has picked up a major Achilles tendon injury while playing for his current team Istanbul Basaksehir. The defending Turkish Super Lig champions will undoubtedly suffer a loss as a result of this injury, as Skrtel has been a good player for the team since making the move from Atalanta back in September 2019. The Slovak is best known for his time with Liverpool where he spent a remarkable eight seasons. He was a key player in the team which punched above its weight for a long period. After leaving the Reds in 2016, Skrtel made the switch to Fenerbahce thus making him no stranger to Turkish football.


His three years with Fenerbahce did not give him any trophies. After a short spell with Atlanta, Skrtel has been brought back to Turkey with IstanbulBasaksehir. Immediately after coming back, Skrtel was among the trophies as he helped the team win the domestic league last season. The defender made 19 appearances in the league and even chipped in with three goals. At 36 years of age, he is entering into the last few years of his career.Basaksehir would not have liked to see their star defender suffered a major injury at this stage in the career. He will be undergoing surgery that is expected to keep him out for a substantial time.

SKRTEL TO MISS MONTHS THROUGH INJURY

InstabulBasaksehir defender Martin Skrtel will miss several months of football after he underwent surgery on a serious Achilles injury. This is according to a source close tohis Turkish club via a statement on the injury suffered by the Slovakian international centre back. Martin Skrtel had to be stretchered off the pitch after he ruptured the Achilles tendon in his left foot during the final league game of the year, a 2-2 draw at home to 10-man Kasimpasa.Martin Skrtel had to leave the field at the start of the second half as a result of the injury and was replaced by Turkish international player Mehmet Topal.

The extent of the injury suffered by Martin Skrtel during the game was revealed by a club source to Turkish media outlet Anadolu Agency.It was revealed that the former Liverpool player would be out of action for a long time. It remains to be seen whether he would return between now and the end of the season when his contract will expire. Martin Skrtel has some months left on his existing deal with the Turkish champions. The said deal will expire in the summer.

Martin Skrtel played for Klopp for some months and that was enough for the German tactician to leave a lasting impression on the Slovakian international centre back.

Martin Skrtel signed for Liverpool in January 2008 from Zenit St. Petersburg in a £6.5m deal. The 35-year-old went on to make 320 appearances for the Reds over an eight-year period before he left for Turkish outfit Fenerbahce in a £5m deal. He scored 17 goals for Liverpool before he left for Turkey in July 2016. He featured in 22 games during the debut season of JurgenKlopp at Liverpool before leaving the club.
