Martin Skrtel suggests Rangers want to secure his signature

Slovakian footballer Martin Skrtel has revealed that Rangers are one of the clubs in the running to land his signature this summer. The 34-year-old is a free-agent after his release from Fenerbahce but he is not in any hurry to choose his next club.

Speaking to reporters, Skrtel said that he has some criteria for the next challenge in mind and his representative is responsible for the negotiations with the interested parties, he told: “There are offers but I’m not in a hurry to choose my new team. I have some criteria and I have to be patient. My agent made interviews with Basaksehir, Fenerbahce, Parma, Olympiacos, and Glasgow Rangers. But I can’t say anything more for now.”

Rangers are currently managed by Skrtel’s former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard and a reunion has been touted through the media over the past few months. Still, the experienced campaigner would demand regular gametime to make the switch and that does not remain a guarantee, considering the recent recruitment of Filip Helander to complement the likes of Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson at the heart of the defence.

Rangers have fallen short in their quest for competing for the Scottish Premiership title but they showed some promise during the previous campaign where they beat Celtic after 13 unsuccessful attempts. Nonetheless, they need to find the consistency in their gameplay and the forthcoming season could be an exciting one, given the players have now adapted to the manager’s ideology.

Meanwhile, Celtic have likewise reinforced the heart of the defence this summer with the arrival of Christopher Jullien from Toulouse and the Frenchman may act as the replacement for Filip Benkovic. Benkovic was hugely impressive during a season-long loan from Leicester City last season, but the Croatian appears unlikely to make a comeback, considering he is determined to succeed in the Premier League.
