SKRTEL: LIVERPOOL MAJOR HONOURS REVEALED

Retired Slovakian senior national team defender Martin Skrtel was not fortunate to win a lot of major trophy during his time on Merseyside with Liverpool. He bagged just one trophy during his eight-year stay at Liverpool and that was the League Cup title at the end of the 2011/12 season.


Liverpool signed Martin Skrtel from Russian Premier League giants Zenit Saint Petersburg at the start of 2006. The Reds paid around £6.5m to sign the Slovakian defender from Zenitin January 2008 and he would pen a four-and-a-half year deal with them.

Martin Skrtel made his Liverpool debut in the league clash with Aston Villa with jersey number 37 on his back.Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was a big fan of Skrtel whom he compared to club legend Jamie Carragher.
At the start of his Liverpool career, Skrtel impressed against Chelsea and Merseyside rivals Everton. He was voted by Liverpool fans as the best player during the Chelsea and Everton games. For the game against Everton on March 30, 2008, Martin Skrtel was immense in the Liverpool defence as they grabbed the three points thanks to a 1-0 away win.
Skrtel was on target for the Reds as he won the only trophy of his Liverpool career in the League Cup. The Slovakian player was one of the Liverpool goalscorersas they shared a four-goal thriller with lower league opposition Cardiff City. Skrtel scored on the hour mark to pave way for extra time. The Bluebirds had earlier taken a first half through Joe Mason in the 19th minute.
In extra time, Dutchman Dirk Kuyt scored in first half of extra time and it was cancelled out by the Cardiff City goal from Ben Turner. Liverpool and Cardiff City played out a 2-2 draw before the Reds won 3-2 on penalties.
