Steven Gerrard Trying To Bring Martin Skrtel To Rangers
Martin Skrtel’s agent has confirmed that Rangers have been in touch with his client of any potential move in the summer. The former Liverpool defender is a teammate of current Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, who has replaced Graeme Murty after a disappointing 2017-18 campaign. Gerrard is hoping to use his contacts in the game to increase the quality within Rangers.
After having played with Skrtel for several years at Liverpool, Gerrard is hoping that the Slovakian defender is convinced about a move to Scotland. Skrtel is currently playing with Turkish outfit Fenerbahce, who are able to offer him the ability to fight for titles and European football. It appears that Skrtel is quite sceptical about a move to Rangers, as he will not be able to earn the same kind of salary as he does at Fenerbahce.
The player’s agent claimed that Turkish clubs are able to offer at least five times the salary provided by Rangers. Hence, it may depend on Gerrard convincing powers in order to bring the Slovakian defender to Ibrox stadium. Rangers had a mediocre campaign in which they finished far away from the title once again. As a result, Gerrard was brought in on a four-year contract and he will formally begin his duties on June 1.
"Martin would be very happy to play under Steven Gerrard but sometimes, regarding transfers, you need to put so many things together and in this situation it's impossible. When there is only a small difference then you can find a solution, but in this case, the salary of the player in Turkey is four or five times more than what Rangers could offer. That makes it impossible. Also, Fenerbahce will never let him go because he is their most important player and they need him for the Champions League qualification,” said Skrtel’s agent.
